Marine Survey & Design Company's assignments have ranged from an underwriter's request to evaluate the safety and risk factors of eight- foot-long, molded plastic paddleboats to an assignment from the Department of the Navy to assess the extent of damage and reasonable cost of repair of damage caused by stevedores moving cargo aboard the USNS Mendonca - a 950' Military Sea Lift Command vessel.

We believe that few, if any, marine survey firms in the world have a broader or more diverse experience than Marine Survey & Design Co. Below are just a few examples of the many types and sizes of vessels and projects successfully completed.

Marine Survey & Design Co. has had an opportunity to inspect for perspective purchase, insurance renewal, cause and origin of damage, design and manufacturing defect and valuation nearly every type of recreational vessel imaginable. Below are depicted just a few representative samples of the thousands of vessels we have inspected who's records are in our extensive database of information and immediately available for reference when needed.

     Motor Vessels

     Sailing Vessels

Our commercial vessel assignments have been no less diverse, spanning a range from eight foot long molded plastic paddle boats to 950' military ships. When the USS Constellation was towed from her museum berth in Baltimore Harbor to the US Naval Academy for an anniversary event, Marine Survey & Design Co. was hired to do the trip and tow survey. When the underwriter for all Maryland Pilots Association vessels wanted an assessment of their risks or the US Navy wanted an independent assessment of cargo damage to a fire door of one of their Sea Lift Command vessels, Marine Survey & Design Co. was called on and up to the task.  The photos below depicted just a few examples of the commercial vessel inspections we have successfully completed.

Likewise our loss and damage survey experience is exceptionally varied and encompasses nearly every aspect of the marine insurance industry.  A recent review of our last 15 years of assignments show 3% involved personal injuries, 4% were fire investigations, 8% involved lightning strikes of vessels, 9.8% involved vessels sinking, 11% involved mechanical failures of some sort, 11.1% involved a vessel striking a submerged object, 13% involved a collision with another vessel or fixed object, and 23.2% were wind or weather related.  This leaves 16.9% for just about anything that can go wrong in or around a marine environment.

Cause & Origin Expertise

When this 50' trawler yacht that had been in service without incident for over 20 years suddenly overturned and sank, in nearly ideal weather conditions, Marine Survey & Design Co. was hired to find out why.  Our investigation involved, among other things, measuring the vessel, creating a computer model utilizing 3-D vessel modeling software and then analyzing that model using the most advanced seakeeping and hydrodynamic software available. Our investigation enabled us to provide our client with an accurate assessment of a series of faults and events that led to the mishap.

The fire damage to this 28' aft cabin cruiser was so severe that most thought the cause and origin of the fire that subsequently damaged three other vessel as well as several docks and pilings would never be known.  Working with some of the best fire investigators available, we were able to painstakingly sift through the rubble until were able to identify the cause of the fire and enabled our client and several other boat owner to successfully recover their loss from the responsible party
